The probable name of the jungle area of Rajbalhat in the Bhurshut district was RAJPUR. Bhurshut paragana was probably established in 985 AD. Damodar river and its tributary Ron (now extinct) used to flow through Bhurshut paragana .
There are various legends about Rajballavi Devi.
One of the common stories is that Rajballavi Devi in the garb of a poor Brahmin girl used to work as a maidservant in a particular family.
Raja Sadananda Roy was travelling by mythical fleet of seven boats laden with merchandise over Ron river around 1200 AD. His fleet of ships got anchored in the Rajbolhat ghats to take rest.
The merchant was attracted by the beauty of the young Brahmin girl and sent word to her to come to his boat which was kept seventh from the bank. The Brahomini girl proceeded towards the boat of the merchant and one by one the boats started sinking with the merchandise as soon as she touched it with her feet. In this way after the sinking of the sixth boat the merchant came to understand that she was a deity and fell at her feet and sought pardon.
MA then instructed Raja to go to the jungle and find a priest who is sitting in the burning ground / Samshan to get her real identity and subsequently build a temple in her honour. Raja Sadananda then entered the jungle and eventually found a Kapalik priest sitting on Panch-mundi Asana (Five-Skull Seat) On seeing Raja Sadananda Kapalik called him by his name and showed him the vision of Ma who radiated like moonlight with 2 shivas on her 2 feet and got vanished.
So to sum up according to legend, Raja Sadananda Roy of the Bhursut kingdom (approx. 810 years ago) had a divine vision of the Goddess. She commanded him to establish a temple in her honour, which led to the creation of the current idol and the naming of the town Rajbalhat after her.
The present Mandir area was a dense jungle and samshan once a upon a time.
